Understanding MERV Ratings
Merv 4
A MERV 4 filter is a basic low-efficiency air filter designed primarily to protect HVAC equipment from large particles. It typically consists of spun fiberglass or polyester in a cardboard frame, offering low resistance to airflow. This filter is not recommended as it doesn't capture the small particles leading to dirty coils and expensive repairs.
Merv 6
A MERV 6 is our bare minimum recommendation. A pleated air filter designed for basic to moderate residential and commercial air filtration. It effectively captures 80% of particles between 3 to 10 microns or larger, such as dust, pollen, lint, and pet dander, offering better air quality than lower-rated filters.
Merv 8
A MERV 8 filter is a high-efficiency pleated air filter designed to capture at least 90% of particles between 3 to 10 microns, including dust, pollen, mold spores, and lint. It is a popular, cost-effective choice for residential and commercial HVAC systems, balancing good air filtration with low airflow resistance.
MERV 11
A MERV 11 filter is a high-efficiency, pleated HVAC air filter designed to capture at least 90% of particles sized 3-10 microns and over 85% of particles sized 1-3 microns. It acts as a significant upgrade from standard filters, effectively trapping pet dander, mold spores, pollen, dust mite debris, and smog, making it ideal for improved residential indoor air quality.
MERV 13
A MERV 13 filter is a high-efficiency, pleated HVAC air filter filtration for residential or commercial systems. It captures at least 90% of particles 3–10 microns, and over 50-75% of particles 0.3–1.0 microns, including viruses, bacteria, smoke, and smog.​ It is critical to ensure your HVAC system can handle the higher resistance; they are best used in systems designed for high-efficiency, often in 4-5 inch depths.
